ISSUE 26
25 DECEMBER 2024 | READ ONLINE
Hi Reader,
Let’s cut to the chase: Purpose is one of those words. Big. Bold. Sounds great on a vision board, but figuring it out? That can feel like standing in front of a messy closet, wondering what to wear to life.
Spoiler alert: Most of us don’t wake up one day with our purpose fully formed. I sure didn’t.
When I was 18, my dad made the call on my career path. Yep, you read that right (and I’m pretty sure I’ve never shared this before). He signed me up for a health and safety degree at a university nearly 1,000 miles away because his new military posting meant we had to move. Staying behind wasn't an option as a broke teenager with no financial independence. So I moved too.
Back then, I didn’t know what I wanted to do or who I wanted to be. All I knew was I wanted to be wildly successful and see the world.
Spoiler alert (again): I didn’t find my purpose at 18. I found it through doing, failing, learning, and figuring out what truly mattered to me.
And here’s the thing - you don’t have to have it all figured out today, either.
Ready to find your purpose? Start here:
1. Ditch the Pressure.
Finding your purpose isn’t like finding your keys. It’s not lost. It’s just waiting for you to pay attention.
2. Ask Better Questions.
- What makes you light up?
- When do you feel in flow, like time just disappears?
- What impact do you secretly dream of making?
3. Stalk Your Own Life.
Look at your calendar. Scroll through your photos. Notice the moments that made you feel alive, not just busy. Those are your breadcrumbs.
4. Steal Time to Reflect.
Journaling doesn’t have to be deep or poetic. Start with this: If my life stood for one thing, what would it be?
5. Read Like Your Life Depends on It.
Because sometimes, it does. These books changed the game for me:
Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl
The Power of Meaning by Emily Esfahani Smith
Start with Why by Simon Sinek
6. Start Small. Like, Tiny.
Experiment without a master plan. Sign up for a class, join a group, volunteer for something random. You’d be surprised how often purpose whispers, “Hey, over here,” when you’re not even looking for it.
Here’s the Truth No One Tells You:
Your purpose isn’t a job title or a five-year plan. It’s not some big, shiny thing waiting on the horizon. It’s in the small, daily choices you make to live in alignment with your values.
Mine evolved from a career I didn’t choose to a calling I can’t imagine living without - empowering purpose-driven leaders to elevate their lives and careers.
You can do this, too.
