Hi Reader,
There’s a certain discomfort that can creep in quietly, almost imperceptibly at first. You don’t hate your job. You’re not in crisis. But somehow, your role no longer fits who you’ve become.
What once felt like your dream job now feels like a holding pattern. You’ve grown as a leader. And now, your purpose is asking more of you.
Somewhere, somehow, you’ve started to feel misaligned. Sort of like wearing a well-tailored jacket that suddenly feels tight across the shoulders.
And yet, this isn’t something we’re taught to recognize or celebrate.
There are no accolades for noticing the internal shift before it turns into frustration or burnout.
But I believe this subtle, simmering knowing (the awareness that you’ve grown beyond your current space) is one of the most powerful signs of professional evolution.
What Happens When the Role That Once Fit, No Longer Does?
Sometimes growth doesn’t look like a big announcement or a public promotion. It looks like a quiet moment of honesty with yourself:
This isn’t where I want to be anymore.
That realization can feel deeply uncomfortable, especially for those of us who have built careers by being dependable, competent, and high-achieving (yes, I'm talking about you).
If you’ve ever stayed in a role longer than you should have because it paid well, offered stability, or felt too risky to leave, you’re not alone.
In fact, I hear this from clients all the time. In their gut, they know they’re no longer being challenged or fulfilled, but are afraid of leaving a secure role, and it all feels too overwhelming to act on.
Here’s What I Often Say to Them. And What I’ll Say to You, Too
You don’t have to hit a breaking point before you make a move.
You don’t have to wait for someone else to give you permission.
And you absolutely don’t need a perfect plan in order to start exploring what’s next.
Careers evolve.
People evolve.
It’s okay to acknowledge that what once fit beautifully may no longer reflect who you’ve become or are still becoming.
There’s no failure in that. In fact, it’s a sign of deep self-awareness.
If You’re Sitting in the In-Between, Some Things to Keep in Mind
- You’re allowed to grow beyond a role, even one you once loved. It’s not betrayal. It’s not disloyalty. It’s honoring your growth.
- Financial security matters, but so does alignment. Golden handcuffs might protect your bank account, but they can quietly cost you joy, energy, and time you won’t get back.
- The “next thing” doesn’t have to be crystal clear yet. Many of the most meaningful pivots begin with recognizing that something needs to change, long before the new direction reveals itself.
- Leaving on your own terms is a mark of leadership. When you exit with thoughtfulness and integrity, you open doors, not just for yourself but also for those who come after you.
