Issue 57: Sometimes the Smallest Companions Change Everything

ISSUE 57

17 SEPTEMBER 2025 | READ ONLINE

Hi Reader,

I’m a little late with this week’s newsletter.

And how fitting (really), because the story I’m sharing is about something that’s been quietly orbiting Earth for decades before anyone noticed.

Astronomers just confirmed something extraordinary: Earth has a new quasi-moon.

Now, if you're not an astronomy lover, you might wonder what is a quasi-moon? It isn’t a second Moon (exactly), but a tiny asteroid, estimated at 19 meters wide, that orbits the Sun in sync with us, weaving around Earth like a hidden dance partner.

Here’s the remarkable part: according to Forbes Europe, it’s probably been there for decades. And we only just noticed.

One researcher put it this way:

The object is small. The estimate … is rough, but place it in the tens of meters, no bigger than that, and likely we are erring on the side of caution. (IFLScience)

Another added:

It is small, faint, and its visibility windows from Earth are rather unfavorable, so it is not surprising that it went unnoticed for that long. (LiveScience)

Why this Matters for Leadership and Purpose

This discovery has me thinking.

How often do we have our own “quasi-moons” (skills, relationships, insights) orbiting quietly nearby, yet invisible to us because we’re too focused on the big, obvious things?

The quasi-moon reminds us:

  • Closeness doesn’t guarantee clarity. Just because it’s near doesn’t mean we see it.
  • Small doesn’t mean insignificant. A 19-meter rock can shift our perspective of Earth’s neighborhood.
  • Attention changes reality. Once observed, it alters how we understand our world.

In leadership, the same is true. We chase bold strategies and sweeping change. But sometimes the breakthrough is already in orbit. We just haven’t named it yet.

A Deeper Reflection

When I coach leaders, their “hidden moons” often look like:

  • An overlooked colleague whose insight reframes a challenge.
  • A neglected skill that, when revived, reignites impact.
  • A quiet instinct that reshapes strategy when trusted.

And when we finally pay attention, everything shifts.

Two Questions For You this Week

So here are a couple of questions to think about as you ponder your own quasi-moon.

  • What’s quietly orbiting you right now that deserves to be noticed?
  • If you gave it your attention, how might it change your trajectory?

Hmm. Too deep? Let me know how this strikes you, and whether these are helpful.

See you next week (hopefully on time!),

Megan

Coming up October 7.

On October 7 at 8:00 a.m. Pacific, I’ll be speaking at the National Safety Council Women’s Division Monthly Meeting.

My session is called:

Empowering Frontline Teams Through Safety Coaching

Frontline leaders often face a tough balance: delivering on company expectations while standing shoulder to shoulder with their teams. Many are promoted into these roles without the skills or support to navigate that tension.

In this talk, I’ll share:

  • A practical introduction to what safety coaching is (and what it isn’t).
  • Simple frameworks leaders can use immediately.
  • Role-play demonstrations of real coaching conversations.
  • Pragmatic tips you can apply the very next day.

The National Sfety Council has been kind enough to open this for those on my email list. So please join us by registering here.

ISSUE 60 8 OCTOBER 2025 | READ ONLINE Hi Reader, Yesterday I was meant to launch something big. Something I shared with you in last week’s newsletter. This project (this dream, this calling, this next chapter) had a date, a vision, a plan. But yesterday came and went. And I didn’t launch. I could dress it up as strategy, alignment, or timing. But if I'm candid with you, the truth is simpler: I wasn’t ready. And saying that out loud has left me a little unmoored. What I’ve Been Feeling It’s...

ISSUE 59 1 OCTOBER 2025 | READ ONLINE Hi Reader, Yesterday I was sitting with a storytelling expert, digging into what it really takes to make people lean in. Her advice was simple: anchor everything around three key messages, and then build your story from there. That conversation couldn’t have come at a better time. Next week, I’ll be officially launching something new: The Institute for Safety Coaching and Leadership (ISCL). I haven’t shared this here before, so think of this as your sneak...

ISSUE 58 24 SEPTEMBER 2025 | READ ONLINE Hello Reader, A few months ago, in the middle of a tough season where I felt like I was losing my confidence (and maybe even my way), my coach gently suggested I read The Artist’s Way. Since then, I’ve been borrowing as many of Julia Cameron’s books as I can from the library. And wow - she has a lot. Each one feels like an invitation to return to the quiet voice inside that says: there’s more here for you. What I’ve Been Learning Morning pages are...
